The Village
Deep in a little valley whose gentle curves stretch as far as the Swiss frontier, you can discover breathtaking ski holidays in Morzine, a village which is keen to preserve its gentle pace of life and authentic Savoyard charm. Morzine is superbly situated right in the heart in one of the largest linked international ski areas in the world: the Portes du Soleil. It is an ideal point from which to set out and discover a wealth of possibilities. The architecture is traditional chalet style, lending a distinctive charm to the resort, often lacking in the purpose-built high altitude ski stations of France. 40 miles east of Geneva, popular with self-drive guests and families, Morzine is an excellent all-round resort offering great value for money. It is a lively resort with vast selection of bars and restaurants to suite everybody taste and itself offers a decent selection of shops and more non-skiing activities than you will need in a week.
The Ski Area
Your lift pass covers 13 resorts, 6 in Switzerland, the remaining 7 in France, all connected by 235 lifts and 650 kms of marked piste. Both Morzine and Avoriaz have ideal gentle nursery slopes for beginners. With professional tuition from the ski school, beginners will soon gain the skill and confidence to venture up the mountain to explore some of the gentle tree lined pistes on Le Pleney, Les Lindarets and Super Morzine. For the more advanced skiers, the Portes du Soleil opens up a wealth of opportunities. There are long motorway runs like Cubore from Pointe de Mossiette right down to Ardent, or Le Grand Paradis from Planachaux to Champery. Red and blue runs inter-link throughout the area. Take a day to ski the fabulous Portes du Soleil circuit, a round in which you ski through eight resorts and cross the French Swiss border. Above Morzine, Point de Nyon offers some steep fall line skiing, Chamossiere is famed for its powder (the little vin chaud hut at the bottom of Chamossiere is a welcome retreat after spending the morning in the powder!). The black runs off the back of Mont Chery are steep and surprisingly bumpy. High above Avoriaz, Machon is a steep knee bashing bump run; further over Crozats offers some exhilarating off piste. The Wall is a fierce bump run, while further over the couloirs above Les Crosets are for extreme skiers.
By car
Driving to the Alps in your own car gives you increased flexibility over timings and luggage with the possibility of two extra days skiing. For Austria, France and Switzerland motorway tolls have to be paid. |
